SUMMIT VENUE 2008

Palazzo

Grand Hotel Palazzo Della Fonte, Fiuggi

In a place where the silent energy of water and nature holds the secret for recharging body and mind – only 50 minutes away from Rome yet ages away from the city noise and smog – the peace and quiet of an ancient fortress town can still be found and well-being is still part of our deeply rooted tradition.

As one of the major leaders in convention sites throughout the Rome area, the Palazzo della Fonte offers a wide range of activities for recreation with its 2 tennis courts, an outdoor and an indoor pool as well as the nearby Fuiggi Golf Club – an 18-hole, 6km golf course.

Programme

The programme for the NGMC has been created from our discussions with senior management from the equipment manufacturer, service provider, content owner and Regulator community. The Summit will incorporate your ideas into the framework – generating a tailored event to suit your needs.

It is intended that the perspectives of both the network provider and the content partners be shared.

At this point, the workshop focus will shift from the providers’ perspectives to that of the customer/consumer. Video Quality of Experience or QoE, its definition and factors affecting QoE will be discussed followed by an interactive segment on how the Customer Experience can be managed through customer-centric processes and measurement, leading to customer retention and increasing revenues and profits.

Workshop 4: 11.15 - 11.55 Workshop “Media Convergence and Deutsche Welle’s Multiplatform Strategy” Presented by Guido Baumhauer, Deutsche WelleMedia Convergence and Deutsche Welle’s Multiplatform Strategy

“Content is king, but effective delivery is King Kong” – Guido Baumhauer’s credo gets right to the heart of what challenges media institutions in today’s digital age.

Until the 1990s, the broadcasting landscape was to a large extent clearly defined: broadcasters produced TV and radio programs and transmitted their programs. Today the situation has significantly changed. New technologies, digitalisation and specifically the internet have changed the distribution and consumption of content. There is a general trend towards more mobility and time-independent usage of media. Moreover, viewers, listeners and users have become active participants, rather than mere consumers. They want to decide, when where what and how they consume content. Many even produce it, share it and discuss it. Interactivity is on the move, web 2.0 applications generate new, exciting forms of communication.

  2. File exhange system faster than ever -from tape based system to file based.
  3. Server information shared amongst different users

Workshop 13: 11.00 - 11.40am - Presented by Alan Moore, SMXL - No Straight Lines

The only straight lines in nature are made by man, and our industrial world is also linear, straight, fixed with its own rules, logic, philosophy and business models. Yet nature is not like that, it has no straight lines. Nature flows, it is more connected, and more interconnected. It suggests a different type of logic at play.

For over 150 years our economies, culture and society have been shaped by the straight-line logic of an industrialised mindset. Mass consumption and mass media have breathed and operated in relative harmony together. In the dawn of the networked age, the old models, infrastructures and logic of the industrialised world become barriers to progress.

Networks whether they are Economic, Cultural or Media have become the nervous systems of society – and this nervous system mimics the logic and the laws of nature.

For broadcasters, the questions are:

  • What are the converged forces (technological, cultural, economic) that are driving so much change?
  • What are the new models of advertising and distribution?
  • How do broadcasters become sticky to their audiences?
  • What is a brand in the early 21st Century?
  • How might content be created in the future?
  • How do broadcasters harness the power of the network – so they too become part of the nervous system of society?
